Holden Payne has it all…or so he thinks. As heir to the founder of the Community – an organization that finds, protects, and manages psychics – he’s rich, powerful, and treated like royalty. But after a series of disappearances and murders rock the Community, he’s branded the fall guy for the scandal and saddled with a babysitter.
Sixtus Rossi is a broad-shouldered, tattooed lumbersexual with a man bun and a steely gaze. He’s also an invulnerable – supposedly impervious to both psychic abilities and Holden’s charms. It’s a claim Holden takes as a challenge. Especially if sleeping with Six may help him learn whether the Community had more to do with the disappearances than they claimed.
As Holden uncovers the truth, he also finds himself getting in deep with the man sent to watch him. His plan to seduce Six for information leads to a connection so intense that some of Six’s shields come crashing down. And with that comes a frightening realization: Holden has to either stand by the Community that has given him everything, or abandon his old life to protect the people he loves.
Contains mature themes.
Oversight takes place a few months after the first book, Insight. All of the regulars at Holden’s club are either in hiding, have been taken to The Farm, or are dead. One night, as Holden was getting head from one of the new bouncers (not very good head I might add), his dad barges in with a new guy named Six (Sixtus). Holden’s father Richard states this is just for the club’s protection, but Holden knows what his father is up to. Six isn’t just there to raise security and be a good bouncer, but is Holden’s new handler.
From the beginning Holden does not like Six. Holden is used to getting his way by using his empath abilities, but can’t do this with Six. Six cannot be persuaded by empaths, he can’t feel anything from anyone. He grew up on The Farm and doesn’t know intimacy or love. He is brash, blunt, and is socially awkward. As the book progresses, Six helps Holden realize his faults and Holden helps Six be able to feel passion and another person’s goodness and love. Six also helps Holden realize that things aren’t so right with The Community… and his father. Will Holden give up everything he has ever known because of this corruptness?
I love the premise of Holden and Six’s love. Six helped Holden come to terms with his own faults and with the things going wrong in the Community while Holden walked Six through the joy of being with someone and loving someone. Six had been on The Farm for almost his whole life. He has no filter, no empathy and cannot feel/discern anyone elses empathy. He can keep anyone out of his head, and near the end of the book Holden has helped him uncover new possibilities with his abilities. There weren’t too many sex scenes. I wish there would have been at least one more because, oh my, they are hot together!! I do wish the book had been a little longer. I want to see more of Holden and Six together, and not just sexually. Either before they went to The Farm, or after. I just feel like I was left hanging as far as their relationship goes.
The plot within the series so far is really good. Oversight does not have as much action or mystery in it as Insight (book 1), but it gets into a lot of details and backstory. Luckily even with a lot of details and backstory, it wasn’t boring. The book flew by! I am totally in love with Shane and Elijah and cannot wait to read about them in the next book. They both definitely deserve a happy ending.
Greg Boudreaux does a wonderful job narrating both Six and Holden. I heard Holden in the last book, but Six is a new character for Greg and I think he nailed it. Six is referred to as a cyborg plenty of times the first half of the book and Greg was able to keep a lot of inflection out of Six’s words during that time. Greg also does Holden justice. I have always liked Holden even from the first book, and I think the way Greg portrays him is how Holden would actually sound in real life. The sex scenes were hot and steamy. I love the low growly voices, grunts and pursuations.
I hope we do see more of Holden and Six in the next book. I definitely want more of them. I feel like I didn’t get enough! All in all, the book went fast and I learned a lot of interesting things about what’s going on in the Community. Oversight is a wonderfully written book with great characters and wonderful love. I can’t wait until the 3rd book comes out on audio!!
