Vampire King Adrian Bloodhart has faced many challenges in the thousands of years he’s been reigning. However, he had thought he’d moved past the stage of his life that was littered with assassination attempts. And, as if the attacks weren’t irritating enough, he finds himself saddled with a personal bodyguard he doesn’t feel he needs or even wants.
When Xavier Dayden had agreed to guard King Adrian, he had expected to be guarding a mature adult, but what he got was a petulant child. Adrian is odd as hell and too sexy for Xavier’s peace of mind. When Xavier finds his control slipping, he’s conflicted. Giving in could lead to so much more than a one night stand, but was it worth the possible heartbreak?
The choice is made when tragedy strikes where it is least expected and, as Adrian’s walls crack and fall, Xavier is there to pick up the pieces. Through the heartache, love is finally in their grasps.
Well when I get to read about vampires, I’m a happy camper. I love all things paranormal. So I was happy to read a new to me author. It was a really good book. My only problem with the whole book was the last section. I can’t say much about it because it will give stuff away but it left me feeling like the flow of the book was off. Just that section. I know it’s a segue into book 2 but it just felt off. Now hopefully you guys will read this and think I’m nuts and all will be well, lol. However, having said that, I enjoyed reading this book. There was mystery, suspense, and hot sex (woohoo) thrown into the mix. I like also that the author brought the vampires slightly out of the norm. Everyone has a norm for how vamps should act or what they are ‘allergic’ to. The author made them her own instead of the usual, and I like that.
King Adrian has been ruling the vampires for a long time. Longer than most to be honest. And since he was just a baby there have been attempts on his life. Mostly due to the asshole he had as a father. But Adrian has done everything possible in his long life to bring his people out from under that oppression and in to flourishing. The problem is, someone is trying to kill him again and they are getting more sneaky and brutal each time. So everyone from friends to his guards suggest he get a personal bodyguard. That doesn’t go over well at all. But he finally is forced to give in and his bodyguard is more than capable. But the tension between those two is hot and it’s hard to keep their distance. Xavier is finding out he wants more than a one night stand but doesn’t know if Adrian is susceptible. Adrian wants more than someone who will leave him as soon as they learn that ‘fame and fortune’ aren’t all it’s cracked up to be. As each attempt on Adrian’s life brings them closer, the more they want to be together. Xavier just has to prove he really is in for the long haul.
I love Adrian in this book but Xavier comes at such a close tie with who I like more. Adrian is this small statured king that everyone underestimates and the truth is he is very brave and strong. But very stubborn and can be very childlike for being so old. Xavier is this big, muscle bound alpha type that does his job very well. Xavier wants to throttle Adrian so many times and it is so comical. It’s almost like a one-up to see who can be the most immature and act the goofiest. Whether it be sexual or purposely trying to get on the others nerves, these two had me cracking up through the whole book. But when push came to shove, Xavier proved over and over he was really there for Adrian. And Adrian needs that. The chemistry between these two is electric, but for Adrian it’s hard because he has been burned so many times. But sometimes you just have to let go and try again anyway. In the end it makes it worthwhile.
This is definitely a book I recommend. It’s got everything you need in a book. Suspense, mystery, a touch of comedy. And of course, love. It’s a book to curl up to after a long day (or even a short one) and just relax to. It will give you a smile and a chance to escape to another world for a while. Happy reading!
