Growing up the outcast in an infamous family of psychics, Nate Black never learned how to control his empath abilities. Now his long-hated gift is his only tool to investigate.
Hitching from his tiny Texas town, Nate is picked up by Trent, a gorgeous engineer who thrives on sarcasm and skepticism. The heat that sparks between them is instant and intense, and Nate ends up trusting Trent with his secrets – something he’s never done before. But once they arrive in the city, the secrets multiply when Nate discovers an underground supernatural community, more missing psychics, and frightening information about his own talent. Nate is left questioning his connection with Trent. Are their feelings real, or are they being propelled by abilities Nate didn’t realize he had?
His fear of his power grows, but Nate must overcome it to find his brother’s killer and trust himself with Trent’s heart.
Contains mature themes.
Nate is a small-town guy who has pretty much been alone all his life and had a rough childhood. Rough at school for being gay and also for being a little “off” to the rest of the town. Nate has a dream (vision) of his brother getting murdered. A chance meeting brings Nate and Trent together. Nate is an empath who is not able to control his ability and Trent’s innate happiness helps Nate by soothing his tormented mind. Nate is drawn to Trent and romance ensues. They both end up going to New York together. Trent has family to see and Nate has to try and figure out what happened to his brother. Upon arriving to New York Nate comes across a suspicious psychic group called The Community who are supposed to help young and alone psychics like Nate and his brother. Nate ends up finding out more about and his family along with what being a psychic really is like. The whole time Trent tries to keep up with everyone who has special powers around him. Who is sending Nate these visions? Who killed his brother? Is The Community all it’s cracked up to be?
I would classify Insight as a paranormal romance mystery. If you are looking for a whimsical type of paranormal you won’t find it with Insight. Sometimes gritty, sometimes steamy, Santino Hassell has created a believable world full of powerful people with different psychic abilities. After the first minute or two Insight drew me in and wouldn’t let me go. There was no dull moment. Everything that happened kept me listening. I didn’t want to put it down. Every character as a distinct personality and I was able to easily imagine everything that was written. Insight will evoke a lot of strong feelings with people who are innately empathic like I am. Some of the things that Nate feels happen in the everyday life of an empath in the real world. There aren’t a whole slough of sexual scenes in the book but there are enough to keep you happy and very very satisfied. Nate and Trent’s chemistry is amazing and their romance was written very well. I want a Trent of my very own!
Greg Boudreaux happens to be one of my top 5 narrators and for very good reasons. With Insight he does some amazingly good accents. There were plenty in this book. Every person has their own voice; I knew exactly who was talking even without the book saying who it was. He brought each character to life in their very own way. The romance scenes were very hot. The suspenseful scenes kept me on my toes!
There are two books following this one in the series but they aren’t on audiobook just yet. I can’t wait to listen to them when they come out!
