BLURB:
After his partner’s death, Thomas Doyle lives a life made of work and late-night sexual encounters with unnamed bodies. It’s a life of solitude that leaves him too much time to think and regret.
Yet, despite everything, he jealously treasures it.
That’s why when Elias Byrne—who comes out of the shadows of Thomas’ nights—suddenly bursts into his everyday life with arrogance, Thomas finds himself fighting against ambivalent feelings—the need to reject the tormented Elias and the strange, inconceivable, and difficult to accept desire to join their solitudes.
REVIEW:
Sadly this one didn’t really work for me for a number of reasons.
Thomas and Elias were both characters who had suffered in the past and were struggling to see a future. They were very different characters, there was an age gap and all the hurt and comfort should have made this book a win for me but it just didn’t happen.
My biggest problem was I never connected with either of the characters – at all. I knew no more about either of them really at the end of the story than I had did at the beginning and from reading the blurb. There was no depth, no detail to interest me and make me invested in what happened to them. Everything was only surface deep and it was very hard to form any connection. This was also hindered by the sometimes strange phrasing and stilted prose that made some parts of the story difficult to read – I did notice that the next book in the series is in Italian so I wonder whether something was lost in the translation.
Just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. If hurt/comfort stories with an age gap are your thing then give this one a go – it may just be what you are looking for.
