BLURB: “I never thought I could want anyone as much as I wanted Nash, then I met you”~Royal
When I was sixteen I was afflicted with a terrible curse…I fell in love with my straight best friend. I never thought I’d move past my feelings for Nash and find someone who could love me in return, until the day a gorgeous marine plopped himself down in my chair and asked me to ink him. I’m falling fast for Zade, but my feelings for Nash are still very real. When life starts getting complicated and Nash speaks the words I never thought I’d hear, the only thing I want is for us to find a way to make this work…together.
“What if I told you, you’d never have to choose?”~Zade
I thought I’d stay in the marines for life, that was the plan. But after a traumatic event I couldn’t make myself re-enlist when my contract was up. Confused and unsure what to do next I called up my best friend for a place to stay. What I didn’t count on was my best friend’s boyfriend practically throwing a sexy tattoo artist at me to keep me busy. Royal is everything I’ve ever wanted and his roommate, Nash, is starting to grow on me, too.
“A few weeks ago I thought I was straight. Now I’m sandwiched between two sweaty men. Can’t say I do anything half-assed.” ~Nash
Of course I’ve noticed that my best friend, Royal is crazy good looking. I have eyes, that doesn’t mean I’m into guys. Although, when I start to notice that his new boyfriend, Zade, is pretty hot too, that makes me start to question things a little. Not to mention the dreams I keep having of the three of us together. I’m willing to try if they are.
**This is NOT a love triangle, just good old fashioned man-on-man-on-man love
CAROLINE’S REVIEW:
Going Commando is book 2 in the Heathens Ink series and brings together Nash, Zade and Royal. Told in alternating first person POV the story is easy to follow and I really liked reading the story in all the MCs voices rather than just one.
Nash and Royal have been friends forever, in fact since Royal’s mum passed away when he was still a teenager they have been more like brothers as Nash’s family took him in. To protect their friendship Royal has never told Nash how he truly feels but there isn’t a day that goes by that Royal doesn’t wish his best friend was gay and was just as in love with him. This crush has taken over Royal’s life and has consumed him for years. When he meets Zade something between them clicks and for the first time ever Royal hopes he may find some happiness that doesn’t revolve around his best friend.
Zade left the Marines after a friend and fellow marine was treated poorly and he lost faith in the Corp. He’s a bit aimless having no real idea what he wants to do with his life – he reminded me of a playful puppy a lot of the time. After one date he is pretty smitten with Royal and is keen to see where this new budding relationship will take him.
Nash has only ever dated girls but has never really shown that much interest in anyone. He and Royal have shared girls before but have never taken it further. He will always put his best friend first and gets most of his enjoyment out of life when he is with Royal. He anchors Royal who tends to leap into situations without thinking things through and sometimes it felt like he was the parent in their friendship.
Things happen too easily for these men. They fall in love WAY too quickly. There isn’t a lot of depth to their relationship – they just slip into it and things are very quickly perfect. I’m not sure if Royal having a brother turning up out of the blue added anything to the overall story or just distracted you from the MC’s – certainly that storyline was too easily fixed as well. You definitely have to suspend your belief here but the story is fun and the characters are likeable. Going Commando is a very easy and quick read and I look forward to the next book in the series.

JEN B.’S REVIEW:
This was a really sweet poly story that centers around two of the guys who work at Heathens Ink, Royal and Nash. They have been roommates and friends since they were kids and Nash’s parents took Royal in after his mom passed away. Royal has had a crush on Nash ever since, but believing Nash was straight, hasn’t acted on it. It isn’t until Royal starts seeing Zade that Nash realizes he has more than friendly feelings for Royal.
Zade was just out of the military and staying with his once friend with benefits, Thane, when Thane’s boyfriend, Madden introduces Zade to Royal. They hit it off and seem to really fit well together. Before things get too far and Zade has an opportunity to broach the subject of being polyamorous, it becomes clear that Nash and Royal have similar feelings toward each other. This works out perfectly for Zade, who was hoping to find this all along, so he doesn’t hesitate to suggest they all date, which quickly turns into an actual threesome relationship.
There is the addition of Liam into the story, who shows up out of the blue as Royal’s sibling, who happened to be trans. This takes up a good bit of the story, as does Nash’s coming to grips with everything and telling his parents about his bisexuality and menage relationship. But, in the middle there are fun dates (loved Zade and Royal’s challenges and dares!) and budding relationship. Though it all fell into place rather easily, and the business with Liam wrapped up fairly quickly, I found this quite an enjoyable story.
I’m looking forward to seeing this story continue in the next installment, as we get to see Heathens Ink owner, Adam and the mysterious new employee.
