Monthly Guest Post with Author TM Smith – Lets’ talk about Tropes

A trope generally refers to an often overused plot line, let’s talk about that. Everyone probably has a favorite ‘trope’ that you lean toward when looking for a new read. For me when I’m reading, it’s threesomes. I love when an Author can build a love story involving there distinctly different people with similar interests, yes, but differing personalities and make it real, make it believable.

Spot the trope

So, if you’ve read my book Gay for Pay you’ve met my troublesome threesome. As I said, I am fascinated with the inner workings of throuples that have successful, working relationships. Recently I’ve read several books with MMM concepts and when it’s done right, it is an amazing thing. As an Author, I think the secret to writing a threesome is, for lack of a better term, three fold. You have to show respect for all three men in the relationship, both as a trouple and as individuals. You have to build a bond of trust. If you go into a book with the mindset, why does he need two lovers? I bet you he will be unfaithful, if one isn’t enough for him. But there in lies the challenge. What if this book is the one that can get you past the preconceived notion that three is not better than two? Just to skirt off topic for a brief moment, something that frustrates me as both a reader and an Author is when a book is purchased and the synopsis clearly states the book is a menage, gay for you, BDSM to mention a few ‘tropes’ and the reviewer speaks negatively about that aspect of the book. Why did you purchase the book? Knowing you were likely not to enjoy the read. And furthermore, why leave a negative review for that book? Anyway, back to the discussion… If you can’t get past something directly related to that particular book, don’t buy it.

Another trope I love in a story is gay for you and/or gay for pay. Before I started writing the first book in the All Cocks stories, Gay for Pay, I had a wonderful conversation with two gay porn stars at a CON. One guy was straight, gay for pay, the other bisexual. I actually said to them that there was not such thing as “gay for pay” finger quotes and all. Let’s just say that by the end of our conversation, my mind had been changed. Here is a guest post I actually wrote several years ago when Gay for Pay released for my lovely family here at Love Bytes…

The concept behind the book, Gay for Pay.

Hello everyone, and thank you to the lovely peeps at Love Bytes for hosting me today. I wanted to elaborate on the story behind this story. Gay for Pay is the first book in an exciting new series, All Cocks stories. The idea unfolded inside my chaotic head after several conversations I had with a couple of gay porn stars at GRL in Chicago. I had the pleasure of meeting two Randy Blue phenoms, Jordan Levine and Caleb Strong. One night we were having drinks at the Speakeasy and somehow we wound up on the subject of gay for pay. You see, I’ve never been a believer of the term. In my opinion, if you are a man and you let another man fuck you or suck you or vice versa, anything physical that involves two men, you are at the very least bi-sexual. Well, Jordan and Caleb set me straight on that assumption real quick.

Jordan is a straight gay for pay guy while Caleb is bi-sexual, I asked how can you be straight and fuck other men? I don’t understand, please help me understand. And he did just that. Our conversations play out on paper in the book, and I think once you read the book you’ll be able to pick out things that Jordan told me about his struggles working in the industry. And I have to say that both these guys were super friendly, outgoing and just a joy to hang out with. Caleb plays a mean hand of poker!

What I did for the backdrop of the story, this world I’m creating with this series, was tied in my fascination with online gay porn. I’m addicted I tell you, I need a twelve step program. I’m especially drawn to the Cockyboys family. I follow several of the models as well as the matriarch of the famdamily, Jake Jaxson, on social media. They just exude this vibe of family, and I love that aspect to their site in particular. So what I did was created my own sort of mock gay porn site and family, the All Cocks stories. While their jobs are creating these sexually charged videos, at the end of the day, it’s all about family. I hope that is what you take with you when you finish the book.

A trope can also be defined as… a common, often conventional, theme, motif, style, etc.
I don’t think I necessarily write any story according to a specific trope or current trend, though the stories usually fit into a trope or trend. I’m talking in circles, aren’t I? The first book in my All Cocks stories titled Gay for Pay certainly fell into the “gay for you” trope. Who doesn’t love a story where someone falls in love with the last person they expected to?

I have a few books that fall under the menage, threesome or throuple trope. This is quite possibly my personal favorite to read. I love when an Author can take three distinctly different personalities and mesh them into a working relationship. As an Author writing this sub-genre, I have to tell you, it’s not as easy as it looks! You really have to work hard at getting the dynamics of the relationship to work well.

My latest book, Choices and Changes, involves two older more mature men getting a second chance at love. I’m not sure if this even is a trope or trend, but it was a lot of fun to write. I didn’t have to worry about working the angst aspect of the story just the right way because there isn’t any. They are grown ass men that know who they are and what they want. That was the most pleasant aspect to writing Adam and Dean’s story.

As always, thanks to the team here at Love Bytes for allowing me to visit every month. So, tell me, what is your favorite trope or trend to read?
