I love how the reviewers relate to the characters. How they either look deeper into their motives or express concern when they aren’t ‘fully fleshed out.’ Also if they’re acting out of character!

Thank you for the interesting responses. When reading reviews if it’s a book I’ve read already I like seeing how much the reviewer perceived the book and how different or similar it was from my own reading. For ones I haven’t read I like getting the general grasp of the story and again the reviewers interpretation.

    Great answers, guys!
I like reviews that aren’t just a summary of the blurb and/or the book. I don’t really want to read that. I want to know why exactly a reviewer liked or disliked a book or a certain part of that book.

Thanks for the question and the great answers. When it is a review of a book I have read myself I look for similarities or differences in the review. Did the reviewer felt the same way and why. If it is a review of a new book I like to read more about why the reviewer liked or disliked the book than a general summary or that is a great read.

Thanks for your answers. In reviews, I like reading mostly about why, substantively, the book was rated as it was. The blurb can tell me what it’s about, but I look for what it was that amazed the reviewer that kept the rating a 5; or what was it that lowered the rating (too often the latter is missing or not substantive). Then I can figure out if those would be the same issues I might have or not, in order to read it myself.

Such great answers. I love reading reviews, because they help me choose new writers, and give me an idea of what I am to find in a book. I do some amateur reviewing myself at Goodreads, and feel very proud when somebody likes my reviews… 😉

If I’ve had my eye on a title, I really like to see a lot of viewpoints. Being part of a book community means you see a lot of titles flash by, so it’s harder budget-wise to read book reviews and not want books people are so enthusiastic about. When I’m trying to cut down on spending, I definitely don’t read as many reviews, but I’ve often gone back to sites to search for old reviews when I find an older book I’m interested in. It’s so good to be able to make an informed decision.

What I like about reviews … well, sometimes I just cannot say what I want to say in writing. So reading about other people’s thoughts from the books I also totally help managing my own opinion, you know?

Truth be told, I like spoilers. 😛 They never bothered me so I’m one of those people that will read a book regardless of what others say. I also like when reviews say/give warnings that the blurb doesn’t. I’ve had a lot of miss because I’ve bought books that they weren’t my cup of tea but didn’t have reviews I could check.

Thanks for answering my question! I love getting a sense of the book from a review. Especially if it’s a new to me author, I want to know that I might love the book.

I like getting others’ points of view about stories. Sometimes other people will pick up on things I’ve missed or will help me see a different angle.
