Going from a constant workload as a fallen Earned back to the normal family and pack tempo is not as easy as Kaleb would like it to be. Changes to the packs everyday life, and Alex stumbling across new things to be given attention, puts more on Kaleb’s table than he had expected. Hectic time with assisting in thwarting a brewing magical war sucks him back in even as he is still rekindling his love for Mickey and his relationship with his family. Plus he has a secret to keep.
There’s no time for family drama of brothers hating him for his powers. But sometimes it’s the little things that deserve the most attention. A day for Kaleb to catch up with his dad and brothers sets off a chain of events. With the assistance of the mystical Order, to which Alex, Pritchard, and Mr. Henry belong, they unveil a century old secret and discover new magic.
I’m currently reading along with two series from this author, and it is a toss-up which I consider the better series. That said, this is one of my favorite books of either series. The one thing I don’t like about reviewing this author’s books is that I like them so much, it is hard not to rave about them, and give spoilers while doing it! But I’ll try. This is the fifth book in a interconnected, non-standalone series, so I’ll review it based on the reader having the background from the other books. I highly recommend this series. Start at the beginning though, because they are definitely not standalones. The series is a continuing tale of a race called the Earned and how they live amongst us and serve.
In this latest installment, Blood of the Past, the author shows a glimpse into where he is going to take the storyline in the future. Kaleb is back from his fall, and is back in human form. What does that mean for the rest of his pack, and the rest of the Earned? Interesting times… would be an understatement.
Mickey is back in the picture, but Kaleb’s other partner from the previous book has been reborn as Connor and is now roughly the same age appearance as Mickey. How can things possibly work out there, with the three of them? Dominic and Alex also get a fair number of pages in the story, and well deserved, as do other cast members from the previous books.
Everything is moving towards a coming epic battle. Will Kaleb and the others be ready when it comes?
If you like alternate reality type books with some magic, hidden secret Orders, Demigods, Witches, and even Angels thrown in, I think you’ll like this one. Give it a try!
