They woke early on Sunday morning and went for a run before popping into a café a couple of blocks from the apartment for coffee and danish. “Dusty, I’m glad I got you; I expected your voicemail,” he said with a chuckle. “Listen, I have some vacation time coming and I wanted to fly out there to see you.”

“You and Mom?”

“No son, only me.” There was an edge to his father’s voice that worried Dusty.

“What’s going on, Dad? Is everything okay with you and Mom?”

“Yeah, yeah, nothing to worry about.” He pressed on. “So, how about next week?”

“That soon? Okay. David and I are heading out to the big house for a BBQ; I’ll double check that I’m not on the schedule next week, and if so, try to get someone to replace me.” Dusty had always been up front and honest with his parents about everything. David popped into the bedroom, pointing at his watch to indicate the time. “Be right there,” Dusty mouthed, saying goodbye to his dad and finally disconnecting the call.

“Everything okay?” David asked.

“Yeah, my dad is coming to visit.”

David reached for him, running his hand down Dusty’s arm and twining their fingers together. “You don’t sound happy about that, babe.”

“He sounded…off. And he’s coming alone, which is odd.” He lifted their joined hands to his mouth, kissing David’s knuckles. “I’m probably reading too much into it—we need to get going though, we’re already running late.”
