How to deal with the pressure of people waiting so anxiously for a new release?

I really wish I had an ordered and articulate piece of advice for this one, I really do. But I don’t. It’s pretty rare that I feel the pressure, because for one I spent my most impressionable years in the world of competitive sports, so I learned to take pressure and use it to my advantage pretty well. But also, the pressure of people waiting for your next release is sort of a distant concept when you’re sitting in a recliner in your pajama’s with a cat on your legs.

When I do allow myself to concentrate on that, though, it can get a little nerve-wracking. The writing of Crash & Burn was the worst, and I have a feeling that book was the peak of that type of anticipation and anxiety for my career. The last half a year was out of the ordinary for me because I was in such bad shape, health-wise, so I can honestly say that readers waiting for my next book was the furthest thing from my mind. I was just worried about making it to Christmas, and whether I’d ever be able to write again at all.

That certainly helps to put things in perspective, and now that I’m finally showing signs of coming out of the other end of that journey, I can honestly say that I hope I feel that pressure with every release. I hope that readers anxiously await my next books for the rest of my career, and I’ll welcome the pressure that comes with it if it means finding the utter glee with which I wrote books when I was healthy.

So, I guess how to deal with it? I’m just not sure there’s a good answer. Close your eyes, breathe, and write another sentence.
