Although they’ve been labeled as a group of misfits, Minneapolis’ 77th police precinct has plenty of talent. The problem is, it’s paranormal talent and no one’s supposed to know about it.
Nick keeps his officers busy chasing after all the creepy crawly things that tend to go “bump” in the night, thus insuring the twin cities are safe and totally unaware that other realms even exist. Nick is the Door Keeper and his job as the precinct’s captain is to maintain order in what would otherwise be chaos.
When said chaos rears its ugly head in the form of a ferocious and brutal vampire, the last thing Nick needs is to deal with a new partner, even if that new partner is as sexy as Arrain.
EXCLUSIVE
Nick asked Chad, “Do you have a picture or something of your mom?”
“Um…no. Sorry. I know that’s…well, I know it’s important. But the only way I can show you an image…I mean, the only way you’ll be able to know what she looks like is…I’ll have to…”
Damn it. This day just kept getting better. Nick took a deep breath. “Yes, yes, yes. I get it. But let me tell you straight out, Chad. If you so much as even hint at showing me anything else, I will personally throw you out of this building. You get me?”
“Y…yes…” A shiver passed through Chad and he looked down. Was that fear? It didn’t look like fear. Not with that sly shitty smile. Without even turning, keeping his eyes leveled on Chad, Nick told Wendy to call Mason back out to the entry. Wendy leaned in the door and shouted for Mason who, surprisingly, wasn’t far. Mason shuffled into the small entry.
“Okay, Chad. I’m ready.” Nick had said that even though he wasn’t. Not even a little. Having someone enter his head was absolutely not anything he could tolerate. But something told him this kid was more than he let on. There was some ancient or sacred aura about him. If he needed to find his mother, the 77th needed to, as well.
Nick took a deep breath and let Chad touch his arm
An image of a woman swam into focus. He could see her standing in the shadow, becoming clearer. She was tall and slender. He could see the impression of long hair pulled back into a ponytail. She was standing next to a wall, brick, dirty. Clearer now. She was younger than Nick expected her to be and appeared to be wearing jeans and a tank top, both dark in color. She was using her arms, moving them around, and that’s when Nick noticed the strange markings. Tattoos perhaps. All Nick could make out were the markings looked like lines, almost spidery, certainly nothing he had ever seen before. He looked up to her face, and it was striking. Her big eyes glinted and flashed as she talked to two men in what now seemed a familiar semi-lit alley. He couldn’t hear them. They were close enough to be able to, but it seemed the sound was off and that was odd. This was a memory of Chad’s that he was interjecting into Nick’s brain. There should be sound with it. He would have to ask about that. He concentrated harder on all three of them. Could he tell what it was she was talking about by the movement of her lips or body language? Yes. She was asking a question…no, several. She was describing someone. Ahh. The kid. These two men were being asked about Chad.
He looked at the men to try to gauge what they were telling her. They were about as tall as the woman, dressed in tight leather. The hair on both was spiky and black, the makeup thick. One of them began to speak, to point in his direction… Then the image was gone.
Nick shivered and breathed, as his mind returned to himself. “Where are they?”
Chad shifted on his crate—more like squirmed—and whispered, “Outside of the Robber’s Club.”
“The gay bar? What the hell was she doing there?” But it made sense. He thought there was something familiar about that alley. He had been up against that brick a time or two in the past.
“Um…well, she was looking for me.”
“You? What were you doing there…I mean, I really don’t want to know what you were doing there but…how old are you?”
Nick thought he saw irritation flit across the young man’s face.
“Twenty-four. I’m old enough.”
“Get that question a lot, I take it?”
Chad just huffed and stared at his hands in his lap.
“So, obviously, the story you gave us earlier, that your mom went off with some friends, was not the truth. Maybe we need to start over?”
Hurri Cosmo lives in Minnesota where she holds tight to the idea that there, where it’s cold a good part of the year, she won’t age as fast. Yep, she avoids the truth as much as she avoids mirrors. But one of the reasons she loves writing is reality doesn’t always offer up a “happily ever after” and being able to take control of that is a powerful lure. Being a happy ending junkie, writing just makes them easier to find. Oh, she doesn’t mind “real life” and she does try to at least keep it in mind when she writes her stories, but she truly loves creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every – single – time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason she loves reading this genre, too. Give her a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and her computer, whether she is reading or writing, and she will entertain herself for hours. The fact she actually gets paid to do it is Snickers bars on the frosting on the cake.
